The Presidential Inauguration of Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.,
September 22-23, 2005

International classical, jazz and folk greats joined student musicians and singers in a series of Inauguration performances in the Marie P. DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts and in Washington Hall.

Leighton Concert Hall

Internationally renowned concert pianist Leon Fleisher joined the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra and the combined voices of Notre Dame's choral groups Thursday in the Leighton Concert Hall. Fleisher and the symphonic orchestra performed Beethoven's "Emperor Concerto." The symphonic orchestra and choirs performed two movements from Haydn's Choral Mass.

Decio Mainstage Theatre

The Ramsey Lewis Trio performed in the Decio Mainstage Theatre.

Philbin Studio Theatre

The Philbin Studio Theatre was converted to a coffeehouse where guitar solos and literary readings recalled the intimate settings that have long fostered creative development.

Browning Cinema

The Browning Cinema showed one of Father Jenkins' favorite movies, Babette's Feast. Based on an Isak Dinesen comic story of pietism and the sensuality of food, it won the 1986 Academy Award for best foreign film.

Washington Hall

Bohola, a Chicago-based traditional Irish folk band known for instrumental virtuosity, strong vocals and stunning arrangements, performed.

Student performances

Student performance groups played a complementary role in most Inauguration events. On Friday, the University's bands lead the Academic Procession from the Main Building to the Joyce Center. Along the route, student ensembles entertained processors with a selection if international music.

The Inauguration Convocation featured original music written by Kenneth Dye, the Notre Dame band director who composed music for such events as the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.

Inauguration guests at a celebratory dinner Thursday were entertained by the Notre Dame Glee Club. A pre-Convocation luncheon Friday features the Notre Dame Folk Choir. The Notre Dame Liturgical Choir was featured at Friday's Inaugural Mass.
